![]() In the shaky realm of literature reacting quickly to a crisis in motion, mess and chaos are the forms that speak best to painful realities. It relies on the ability to channel inner experience outward, and because no inner experience of the coronavirus pandemic could plausibly be described as complete, prose that renders it static and comprehensible rings false. Three assemblies of coronavirus-response writing-Zadie Smith’s essay collection Intimations The New York Times’ short-fiction compilation, The Decameron Project and the mixed-genre anthology And We Came Outside and Saw the Stars Again, edited by Ilan Stavans-tell me why: No one has had time to truly refine their ideas about personal life in a state of widespread isolation and existential dread, and literature, even when political, is a fundamentally personal realm. ![]() ![]() So far, the nascent literature of the coronavirus pandemic has reinforced my distrust. Even in fascist-free situations, the concealment principle is common enough that I have come to approach beauty and neatness in art with some skepticism. Walter Benjamin wrote that a key element of fascism is the aestheticization of politics-the concealment of bad thinking behind bright optics. A corollary fact is that polished, elegant prose serves as a useful, if not always intentional, hiding place for half-baked ideas. ![]() A bleak fact of writing is that honing sentences is often far easier than honing the thoughts they convey. ![]()

Its premise replaces the civilization that makes our lives soft and easy with that most tenacious of American dreams: the frontier, where settlers get to reinvent society from the ground up and prove their worth in feats of manly valor. This is postapocalyptic fiction, a genre that, for all its lamentation over the loss of the world we live in now, often runs on a current of nostalgia for an earlier age. ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s essential that their home, a place they call the Balcony Cliffs, be unidentifiable from above, because their unnamed city is intermittently terrorized by a ravenous giant bear named Mord, and Mord can fly. Rachel, the twenty-eight-year-old narrator of Jeff VanderMeer’s new novel, “Borne,” lives in a harrowed, poisoned, semi-ruined city, where she scavenges scraps of food and tradeable detritus from the wreckage, a dangerous enterprise in a landscape haunted by the similarly desperate. “Borne” brings an acute intimacy to the tropes of genre fiction. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Wolf Brother became a national bestseller in the United States, and the rights to the series were bought by 20th Century Fox to be made into major motion pictures. I believe that the setting is cool and the plot was well thought-out. However, this book is not terrible compared to the others it is competing against in the same category. There is minimal language, and the violence was not too bad, though there were a few somewhat graphic/bloody death and maiming scenes. The period scene was, admittedly, uncomfortable, but it was not unreasonable. Other than that scene, the romance was reasonable. ![]() This being said, I tore out that scene in the book and burned it. ![]() I was somewhat sensitive to bad content at the time, and I still do not approve of blatant inappropriateness. Though described as "vague" by the reviewers, there is a sex scene that I was able to understand clear as crystal when I was only 13 years old (when I read this book). However, the romance and inappropriate content seemed to get the upper hand over my interest in the book overall. ![]() This book seemed interesting based on the cover summary and first several chapters, and the setting is quite a cool concept. ![]() ![]() ![]() Kill.īut there are truths that not even Luc can prepare for, and as Evie’s abilities evolve, the consequences of everything he’s done have devastating consequences.
